Suggested that narrative works with five different codes which activate the reader to make sense of it all:
Action code - Narrative device by which a resolution is produced through action.
Enigma code - Narrative device that teases the audience by presenting a puzzle/riddle to be solved.
Symbolic code - Linking with Connotations and hidden meanings of words.
Semic code - Linking with Denotations and the literal meanings of words.
Cultural code - Narrative device which the audience can recognise as being part of a culture.
