When creating and producing our horror film we rated it a '15'. We thought this age rating was appropriate as our film/opening sequence contains a small amount of blood/gore but it doesn't contain any swearing. We think that typically, teenagers would want to view our media product/horror film. I think this because the majority of the time, it is teenagers that seek thrill out of watching horror/thriller genre compared to the older generation. It is generally, groups of teenagers who go to the cinema to observe the latest film out in the evening, therefore we think that groups of teenagers, pairs of teenagers would be the highest ranking of viewers for our product; and they come above everybody else- they are usually the most up-to-date with new technology and films.
I also believe that due to our research of existing horror films, we found out that their age ratings were similar to what we had in mind. Scream however was rated at an 18, this is due to that film being a lot more graphic than our trailer is. Despite this, I believe that our horror film trailer does contain similar themes and storylines and this made us choose the age rating below Scream had chosen, a 15.
Social media is a big influence when it comes to the release of a film. Taking this into account, I think that teenagers or 13 to 18 year olds are the most influential group of people when using social media. Platforms such as, Facebook and Twitter, allow their users to display their thoughts on particular topics they decide to share about. This includes upcoming or newly released films, such as horror films. I think that having a target audience of this age allows us to have the large amount of comments and publicity that we need to have a successful release. Despite this, having such an easily accessible platform for audiences to express their views on comes with its negative aspects. This includes them being able to downgrade our horror film trailer and so this could badly affect our sales.
